Game Report – Chiles v. Jacksonville Bolles

 (December 11, 2004)

For those of you who do not remember our trip to Jacksonville last year, it was a bitter cold and wet day.  After the Bolles JV was able to defeat the Chiles JV, the two Varsity sides played hard to a 0-0 tie.

This year Bolles, which through December 6 was undefeated (5-0-2) and which had outscored their opponents 46-3, returned the favor and visited Chiles in Tallahassee.  It was a cold and blustery day and one in which the teacher, Coach Gill, went up against one of his former players, the coach at Bolles.

The Chiles JV squad, which until their bad second half against Leon last week was undefeated, played the Bolles squad very well.  They gave up a goal and had to fight back. A beautiful cross by Justin Kidd was headed into the net by Sterling Mixon; however the Referee called off-sides on the play (admittedly close, but which appeared to be an incorrect call after looking at a tape of the play).  Nevertheless, Chiles continued to pressure and in the last minute of the contest Sterling Mixon played a ball to Seth Allen who scored the equalizer.  The two sides tied 1-1. Keeper Brady Moore had 7 saves, and Chiles had shots by Jeremy Whitt, Seth Allen, Steven Weeks & 3 by Nelson James.

The Varsity squads played just as even throughout their match.  With about a minute left in the first half, though, Bolles took a shot and Danny Cammarata was called for a hand ball in the box, earning a blue card and requiring Chiles to play a man down the rest of the match.  Admittedly the shot would have found the back of the net.  The Bolles player put the penalty kick into the net, putting Bolles up 1-0 at halftime.

Being a man down, however, seemed to energize our boys; in the second half the boys were outplaying the visitors.  This resulted first in a great cross by Tyler Williams to Gary Warner who easily pounded the ball into the net just 7 minutes into the second half to equalize.  Then, at the 54th minute a Bolles defender tried to clear the ball out but Kicker Renwick intercepted and launched a shot from 20 yards out which screamed past the keeper to put the Chiles side up 2-1.

At about the 66th minute of the match, however, Gary Warner and a Bolles player were both given yellow cards.  This was the second yellow card of the match for Gary, thus earning him a red card.  For the remainder of the match Chiles was playing down 2 men.  The defense and the work of keeper Mike Turner turned Bolles away time after time. Finally, however, in the 82 minute 55 second mark (of 80 minutes) Bolles was able to get the equalizer. As soon as the ensuing play began with a touch of the ball by Chiles the Referee blew the whistle ending the contest, tied 2-2.

Goalkeeper Mike Turner was credited with 7 saves and defender Jacob Howard with 1 save.  Chiles had shots by Bryan Allen, Tyler, Pat Deasy, and Andrew Struhs.

Although the boys were down after allowing the tie I believe they can hold their heads up, not only tying Bolles but completely outplaying them, being down 1 man for all of the second half, and down 2 men for the final 15-17 minutes of the match.

The next matches for Chiles, now at 4-3-2 (3-1 District), are at the Hickory Point tournament in Leesburg, beginning Tuesday, December 28.  Their first match is against Orlando Boone.

Chiles' next home game is Tuesday, January 4, when they will host Rickards.
