In what was a matchup with major district implications, the Chiles High boys soccer team rocketed past Leon 3-1 thanks to two quick second-half goals.
"This was a good win for us," Chiles coach Craig Bultmann said.
"It's always nice to beat Leon given the quality of their program."
The Timberwolves constantly exploited the youth of the Lions and their lack of backline speed with countless runs in space by their forwards.
Chiles fired first, scoring in the 19th minute off a throw-in which was headed by Steven Eppinger to Eric Frohlich and one-timed off the head past Leon keeper Dillon Harris. Harris recorded nine great saves on the night and prevented Chiles from making this a blowout.
The Lions managed to post a tying score when a second-chance shot by James Hyder was redirected into goal off a Timberwolves defender.
From that point on in the first-half, though, it was all Chiles. They repeatedly dropped balls into the corner and out-raced the Leon defense to the point of attack. Within a five minute span of the second-half, the Timberwolves received goals from Tyler Molenburg and Zac Gregg.
Molenburg's goal was a beautiful left-footed ball from the left corner of the box into the near post. Gregg followed shortly after on a header off a corner to the middle of the box from the foot of Frohlich.
